Dr. Thomas Freeman
ABC Newsでビデオを観て感動したので、エッセイを書きました。
I recently watched on ABC News a tribute to Dr. Thomas Freeman, who recently passed at the age of 100. The video touched me as I saw a role model in him.
Dr. Freeman was a debate coach for eight decades at Texas Southern University. He made sure that his students would excel by telling them, “What we do, we do well. What we don’t do well, we don’t do at all.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. counted himself as one of his students. As Dr. King has demonstrated, words matter, and how we use them matters even more.
Watching Dr. Freeman’s debate students articulate their opinions gives you hope and confidence for the future. Their words will have a power to shape the world.
I should add, as an aside, that Dr. Freeman showed up at work even after turning 100, which inspires me to keep on pushing forward. I now realize that I barely got across the start line.
On a final note, you could argue that Dr. Freeman never passed away; his legacy lives on in his students. This statement coming from the affirmative side, I’m positive, would be irrefutable.
